50,000 Words Reached! Saturday, Nov 25 2006

At 2:15 yesterday afternoon, I officially broke the 50,000 work mark on Revenant.? Needless to say, I am very happy about it even though I still have about 3 chapters left to write before I reach the end of the story!

NaNoWriMo and Other Tales Tuesday, Nov 14 2006

Things are getting interesting. NaNoWriMo is getting harder - even though I only have 15,000 words left to reach the NaNo goal of 50,000.? I’m just short of halfway through my outline…. but I’ve discovered that I have missing scenes and that the order I outlined things in isn’t quite working.? I’m not changing the outline right now - though I am adding a few scenes where they’re really needed.? I’m just writing through the outline and I’ll tear the whole thing apart later when I edit it.? I think the overall story will end up being between 80,000 and 100,000 before I edit it.

I’ve also discovered that even when I’m trying to write lots of words, I’m still stingy with descriptions. *laughs* I know what the characters and settings look like and I forget the readers don’t.? Descriptions will definitely add to the length of the story when I edit it.

There’s one other thing that’s causing me difficulty when working on my NaNo story. ? I was listening to the radio on the way home from work and the lyrics of one song just struck me as a good idea for a story - so much that I had to jot down the name of the song and the artist so I wouldn’t lose it.? I figured that if I wrote down the concept when I got home, it would be willing to sit in the background and wait until NaNo was over.

I was wrong. Not only was it not willing to sit in the background, but it procreated. It became 4 short stories.? Then it grew a framework that would connect all four stories. The stories probably could stand on their own…. and I’m hoping that’s the case because I was thinking this might be a short story idea that I could look into getting published.

I’ve had to buy a notebook to start writing the framework.? I’m doing it in longhand, mainly to keep it separate from my NaNo writing and put it in its context. It’s making me want to finish my NaNo story as soon as possible, but at the same time I’m finding it hard to concentrate on the NaNo story!

Ah well, I can certainly think of worse writing problems to have!

And here comes the wall. . . Tuesday, Nov 7 2006

I hit a NaNo wall yesterday. . .

I haven’t run out story. Or words.
I just didn’t want to sit in front of the computer.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to write, per se….
It just seemed like something I “had” to do.

I did it - got my words in, but it was hard.? :(

NaNoWriMo - 2 Days In Friday, Nov 3 2006

Two days completed and I’m 6880 words into Revenant. That puts me 2 days ahead of my word count for the NaNo goal of 50,000 words. My outside goal is to make it to 75,000 words though, and I’m just a bit short of one day ahead of my count for that goal as well.

So far the writing is going well :-) This weekend I’m participating in a word count marathon over at Forward Motion and hoping to get 10,000 words done. I need to get at least 5,000 words over the weekend to stay on track, but I’d like to get further ahead.

My inner editor is already shuddering at some of the writing, but at least the ideas and concepts are down. I can improve on them later, once I have the whole story on paper. And let’s not even talk about the plot holes and jumps that are happening! LOL
